So in March I decided I wanted to volunteer at the zoo as a docent - that's someone who stands outside exhibits and answers questions about animals. So I went to the info meeting, interviewed, went to 6 weeks of classes (7 hours every Saturday - that's all my Saturdays for a month and a half!), did my 12 hours shadowing/training, and as of last Saturday, tada! I'm a docent, with a nametage and everything. And if I stick around for 6 months they'll let me wear a cool zoo uniform. I've spent my entire life secretely envying the khaki-people: safari guides, zoo workers, trainers... now I'm one of them! That's right! Come to the zoo and see me in all my khaki-wearing glory.
So, yes. That feels good - I'm officially associated with amazing animals. Things I've learned so far: most commonly asked question is"where's the bathroom," never stand by the baboons unless you're willing to explain to children why their butts are so red, and the meerkats are surprisingly afraid of umbrellas. Wish me luck!
