So I have class in 15 minutes, but I've been feeling guilty about not posting. So here's a quick update:
For the past year, my status on gmail chat has read "going to the zoo!" I have not changed this status because it continues to be true. Throughout last year I went through the process of becoming an official docent of the Seneca Park Zoo. When my training was complete, I dragged Dustin to the ceremony where they presented me my certificate and real uniform (turns out we weren't supposed to bring non-docents! oops!), wore my official zoo jacket everywhere for about a month, and had fun letting small children pet the pelts of dead tigers and polar bears while forcing animal facts down their throats. I thought "wow, this is amazing. I can't believe I'm really an official part of the zoo. I never imagined I could do something this cool!" Oh how little I knew!
This past January, I applied to be a volunteer assistant keeper, and I was accepted! For eight hours a week, I go "backstage" and help take care of LIVING penguins, wolves, hyenas, leopard, lynx, cougar, polar bears, and sea lions! I am dizzy and sick with exhiliration - a child who has eaten too much candy. Basically, some of my wildest dreams are coming true. I can't express my gratitude. I know I don't deserve such a huge lump of AMAZING falling in my lap, but no complaints here :) Ahhh! gonna be late for class (plant physiology lab - blah!) More details to come!

It is really fun to see you so happy! Know what would be really awesome? To SEE it in pictures! Are cameras allowed "backstage"? Do it if you can! You need to document these experiences!!! (Call me and I'll talk you through posting them onto blogger!) ~em
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great up-date. I, too, am glad you are so happy... just imagine how happy you will be when you are not attenting 3/4 schools at one time.
